Food Donation Guidelines on Geev

After many requests from our community and to take steps to reduce food waste, food donations are now welcome on Geev!

What foods are allowed on Geev and what foods aren't?

Our main rule is if you'd eat it, then you can donate it.

However, for hygienic reasons and to respect current rules and regulations, there are certain foods that we cannot accept on Geev.

The following foods are not allowed on Geev:

  • Food that has passed its “expiration” or “use by” date
  • Pastries with a cream filling
  • Certain seafood including unwrapped fish products, shellfish, crustaceans and oysters
  • Certain meat products including unwrapped meats, ground beef, organ meat and giblets
  • Any type of stuffing or poultry, meat, or vegetable containing stuffing, like stuffing for a turkey

The Geev team reserves the right to refuse any ad that offers food that looks rotten or unfit for consumption.

The following foods are allowed on Geev (not an exhaustive list):

  • Food that is still good to eat
  • Items that have passed their “best before” date
    • These items are not dangerous to eat, the best before date simply indicates that the item may have lost some of its flavour or nutritional value.
  • Frozen products that have not been thawed and frozen again

It's really important to respect the cold chain when transporting and conserving food, particularly frozen foods (see here for more info). Never re-freeze something that you have already thawed. If you have any doubts about the quality of a product, don't eat it!

  • Homemade food that does not contain any of our prohibited ingredients
  • Products that have already been opened (not including those on our prohibited list)

As such, you can find all of this food on Geev:

  • Beautiful mandarins

  • Yummy homemade meals that one of our Geevers made too much of!
  • Fresh products in their original packaging (cold cuts, cheese)
  • Pasta, rice and other dry food
  • Canned foods that aren't expired
  • Cookies
  • Sauces
  • Packaged food (flour, sugar, baby formula, etc.)
  • Cereal
  • Cakes that do not contain pastry cream
  • ...

If you have doubts about the quality of a food item, don't eat it!

You can also report any suspicious food items you see on the app. If you have concerns about a Geever, check out their profile to see their rating, number of donations, etc.
